Jackson State DL Kaseem Vauls resuscitated after cardiac arrest, in critical condition
Kaseem Vauls, a redshirt freshman defensive lineman at Jackson State, nearly lost his life this week after suffering from cardiac arrest on Wednesday. However, as of today, he is in stable condition after surgery Wednesday afternoon.
Vauls had to be resuscitated before that surgery. As of Thursday evening, his father, Williams Vauls, told the Clarion Ledger that Vauls was heavily sedated and is in ‘stable condition, but still critical’.
Vauls’ father said his son generally hadn’t felt well in the last few weeks. Still, he continued to participate in activities with the football team. The issues manifested in the form of stomach pains but, still, he did not notify any of his coaches or trainers.
“What the doctors think happened (is) that when Kaseem’s heart was failing, that was what was giving him the stomach pains,” said Vauls. “His liver was suffering as fluid built up with toxins in his liver, kidneys, and blood. All those toxins built up in his bloodstream and his heart could not operate properly. (So) the machine is being used to clean out the blood and toxins.”
The 250-pound freshman out of Columbia, South Carolina and Irmo High School didn’t see any action during this season with the Tigers. However, his recovery will hopefully go well enough so that he can get back on his feet and return to the field as soon as possible.
