Jalen Rose reacts to Maryland using 'Crab Five' nickname

One of the coolest nicknames of any group in college basketball history was undoubtedly the “Fab Five” when they suited up for the Michigan Wolverines. On Friday afternoon, in the NCAA Tournament, we got an interesting variation of that nickname. The Maryland Terrapins like referring to themselves as the ‘Crab Five’. And Jalen Rose actually admitted on the broadcast that the Wolverines wanted to call themselves the ‘Five Times’. He said he was happy the public ignored them at the time.
It’s pretty funny hearing that the ‘Fab Five’ wanted to name themselves, ‘Five Times’. Like Rose mentioned, luckily the public ignored them. Fab Five is one of the more iconic group nicknames in college basketball history. And plenty of companies, including Nike and others, made millions off them.
The ‘Crab Five’ are led by freshman big man Derik Queen, one of the best in the nation. He’s been averaging 16.3 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game in his first year for Maryland.
Maryland steamrolled Grand Canyon in the first round
The No. 4 seed Maryland Terrapins absolutely obliterated the No. 13 seed Grand Canyon Antelopes. This one was never a doubt as the ‘Terps delivered one of the biggest blowouts of the first two rounds, handling GCU 81-49 on Friday. Maryland has one of the best big men in America in Derik Queen and he played like it when the lights were the brightest, stuffing the stat sheet with 12 points and 15 rebounds.

He was joined by four others in double digits, Julian Reese (18 points), Ja’Kobi Gillespie (16 points), Selton Miguel (13 points), and DeShawn Harris-Smith (11 points). The Antelopes simply had no answers for the Terrapins all game long, trailing by 14 points at halftime.
And Maryland opened things up even further in the second half, outscoring them 39-21. Grand Canyon has been one of the Cinderella darlings in recent years in the NCAA Tourney, but on Friday the Terrapins extinguished any sort of hope for magic.
