Jamal Chretien II showing big time potential as a freshman
Katy, Texas – Jamal Chretien II has quickly ascended this season as a freshman for Mayde Creek High in the Houston area.
The 6-foot-3 left-handed shooter is part of backcourt for the 19-8 Rams that also includes freshman point guard Christian Jones.
Chretien was averaging 13.5 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game prior to an 18 point outing Friday night. The season totals include seven games of 20 points or more, and one double-double.
The fast start to his high school career has garnered attention from SEC and WAC schools according to Mayde Creek head coach Anthony Fobb.
“He’s a very humble kid,” Fobb told On3 Thursday. “The colleges calling are trying to get in early with him, and build a relationship with him.”
Using the body and playing with the ball will be key
Chretien is one of the top freshman shooters in the state of Texas. He’s on pace to knock down more than 60 three-pointers at over 37%. For Coach Fobb, it will be understanding how to use his body that takes him to the next level.
“He really can shoot the ball. He just doesn’t know how to use his body. Right now, his confidence is not as high as some of the other guys because he’s a shooter. If you aren’t knocking down shots your confidence can get a little down. My biggest thing is instilling confidence with the ball in his hands. He’s not used to playing with the ball in his hands.”

Expanding the game to be a confident player with the ball in hand is the next step offensively.
“At some point, I would like to get him to become a point guard. Become a point guard, shooting guard, a guard with the ball in his hands. Right now, his confidence isn’t there for that.”
Sky is the limit for the 2025 guard
Coach Fobb believes Chretien has the highest upside in a program that has three guards that will play college basketball.
“He’s going to grow. He’s got a 6-foot-7 wingspan right now. The sky is the limit for him. Learning to use his body or using his strengths to finish around the rim, being a defensive stopper and using everything he’s got.”
Chretien and Christian Jones combine to average 29 points, 7.5 rebounds, 6.8 assists and 3.8 steals per game giving the Rams one of the top freshman guard duos in the Lone Star State. The duo has also combined to knock down over 130 three-pointers through 27 games.
