James Franklin evaluates Penn State's offense with 20-6 halftime lead over West Virginia

James Franklin liked some things from his Penn State offense in the first half, but there was plenty of room for improvement despite the 20-6 lead over West Virginia.

Going into the half, it was a slow start for the Nittany Lions. But, once they got into rhythm, it was a different ball game.

That included a three-play, 73-yard drive to extend the lead to two scores right at the end of the half.

“Well, early on and we just didn’t get in rhythm, whether it was penalties or whether it was fumbled snaps and things like that,” Franklin told FOX’s Jenny Taft. “Once we got them calmed down, I thought we did some really good things.

“Yeah, offensively, we got to sustain some drives, and I’m saying that to help our defense out. And then we got to get some three and outs on defense to get them off the field. They did a good job sustaining some drives, and that obviously right before the half was big. I’ve been saying since the 90s: ducks accepted, spirals preferred, but we’ll take a duck anytime.”

After two quarters of play, Penn State quarterback Drew Allar was eight-of-13 passing for 199 yards and three touchdowns. He engineered the offense after a slow start in the first quarter.

As far as Franklin saying duck throws, well, as long as they’re completed, it’s fine right? Allar looked the part of the highly touted prospect he was as he got comfortable.

Penn State and Franklin even shook off a controversial call which could’ve pulled West Virginia even closer.

West Virginia was a popular upset pick over the Nittany Lions. But ESPN’s Greg McElroy liked Penn State all the way.

“The biggest question mark around the Lions is the play of Drew Allar,” McElroy said. “While he was 10-2 in the regular season and they made it to the Peach Bowl, there was a lot of people that were kind of underwhelmed with what they saw from a guy who came to State College with five stars next to his name and expected to take this offense to the next level.”

Well, so far so good as Franklin sees it.
