Report: Jamey Chadwell set to be named as new head coach for the Liberty Flames
Former Coastal Carolina head coach Jamey Chadwell is set to be hired as the head coach of the Liberty Flames, according to a report from Ross Dellenger. He replaces former Flames head coach Hugh Freeze, who has since moved on to be the head man of the Auburn Tigers.
Pete Thamel had noted on Thursday night there was mutual interest between both parties, but they did not want to officially get a deal done. They were waiting until after the Sun Belt Championship game for Chadwell to make a final decision, according to Thamel. Coastal Carolina just got throttled by the Troy Trojans 45-26 on Saturday afternoon in the 2022 Sun Belt Championship Game.
Chadwell also interviewed for the South Florida head coaching position.
Jamey Chadwell is one of the most successful non-Power Five HCs
This year was Chadwell’s fifth year as the head man of the Chanticleers. He’s turned them into one of the better non power Five programs in all of college football and his body of work there has been very impressive.
In 2020 and 2021, he led the Chants to back-to-back 11-win seasons. In 2020, he guided the Chanticleers to a top 10 ranking at one point and they finished that season ranked 14th in America. Not only that, after guiding Coastal Carolina to a 11-1 overall record and a Sun Belt Championship that year, he was named AP College Coach of the Year. He won numerous other Coach of the Year awards during the 2020 season.

Chadwell led Coastal Carolina to three straight bowl appearances during the 2020, 2021, and 2022 seasons. He’s without a doubt, one of the more successful coaches at the non-Power Five schools in the past few years.
Chadwell has won 90 games during 12 years as a head coach. Outside of Coastal Carolina (2017, 2019-present) he’s had stints at North Greenville, (2009-2011), Delta State (2012), and Charleston Southern (2013-2016).
