Arizona State freshman and former five-star recruit Jayden Quaintance has officially entered the NCAA Transfer Portal, On3 has learned. He enters after just one season with the Sun Devils.

Quaintance signed with ASU as a member of the Class of 2024, where he was ranked as a top-10 national prospect. He originally committed to and signed with Kentucky, but chose to reopen his recruitment after head coach John Calipari left for Arkansas.

He then chose the Sun Devils over Louisville, Arkansas, Memphis and a handful of other programs.

The 6-foot-10, 225-pounder was the centerpiece of ASU’s recruiting class, but he — and the rest of the Sun Devils’ roster — struggled to live up to the hype surrounding them in his first year. They opened the season 9-2 in non-conference play but finished 4-16 in the Big 12, including losing 10 of their last 11 games.

Quaintance had an up-and-down freshman year after reclassifying up a grade prior to his junior year of high school. The 17-year-old showed plenty of signs of what made him the nation’s No. 7 overall recruit. But he also struggled mightily at times, particularly in Big 12 play. Across 25 games in the regular season, he averaged 9.4 points and 7.9 rebounds while shooting 52% from the field. He shot only 48% from the free throw line though and battled foul trouble at times.

Once he officially hits the portal, however, he’ll be one of the nation’s most wanted prospects. At just 17 years old, he still has another full year before he can enter the NBA Draft. He is already one of the nation’s premier shot blockers, swatting away 2.6 attempts per game, which ranks among the top 10 nationally.
