As Texas extended its lead against Michigan in Saturday’s high-profile matchup, it did so without Jaydon Blue. Saturday’s starting running back, he left with an ankle injury in the early going.

FOX’s Jenny Taft reported Blue headed to the locker room at one point, but appears to be doing what he can to get back in the game. However, his status was still unclear as of the second quarter.

Prior to his injury, Blue took four carries for 14 yards as he continues to start in a shorthanded Texas backfield. The medical staff was working on his right ankle, according to Taft, and he continued to make a push to return. He later came back to game action with less than a minute to play in the second quarter.

“Texas has continued to play without running back Jaydon Blue right now,” Taft said on the broadcast. “He is currently on the sideline. They have re-taped his right ankle. He has been in and out of the medical tent, he ran up to the locker room at one point.

“Right now, he is trying to make sure his body is available. Texas doesn’t want to provide a yea or nay, but right now, he’s trying to stay in it. He wants to be a factor in this one.”

More on Jaydon Blue, Texas RB injuries

Blue took over the starting role at Texas after a slew of injuries in the running back room. CJ Baxter and Christian Clark both suffered season-ending injuries in training camp, meaning he and Gibson were expected to pick up the slack. In last week’s season opener, Blue carried the ball 11 times for 57 yards in a 52-0 win over Colorado State.

Last season, Blue had 65 carries for 398 yards, three touchdowns and 6.1 yards per carry. He also reeled in 14 catches for 135 yards and a touchdown.

As a member of the Class of 2022, Blue was a four-star recruit out of Houston (Tx.) Klein Cain, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He was the No. 30 overall prospect in the state, the No. 11 running back in the class and the No. 180 overall prospect in the class.

Texas extended its lead to 14-3 over Michigan after Taft’s update. Jerrick Gibson ran in his first touchdown of the day as the Longhorns continued to wreak havoc on the Wolverines defense.
