Jaylen Thompson, a 6-foot-7 small forward out of Oakland (Calif.) Southern California Academy has committed to Stanford basketball for the class of 2022, he tells On3.

Thompson is the Cardinal’s second commitment of the 2022 class, following three-star small forward Ryan Agarwal. Stanford is also targeting JJ Starling, Collin Chandler, among others.

Thompson decided to stay close to home and play for Stanford over USC, Arizona State, San Diego State, Washington, among others.

Jaylen Thompson on why he chose Stanford

“Stanford has been the most consistent school to recruit me,” Thompson said. “They reached out to me all the time and really prioritized me. Stanford can really develop their players, especially with their bigger wings.”

Thompson has been set on Stanford for quite some time

“I was keeping things pretty open but after a while, I’d say a few months ago, I was like ‘this is where I want to go.’ It makes the most sense. It’s close to home, it’s in the Pac-12, and it’s the best educationally.”

Academics played a huge role for Thompson when deciding on Stanford. Thompson, who boasts a 4.0 GPA says he would like to get a business degree while at Stanford. He says “working in the business world is one of my biggest dreams.”

Thompson describes himself and his game

“I’m a very personable and friendly guy,” Thompson says. “I’m very approachable. So if anyone comes up to me, they shouldn’t feel scared to talk to me. I’ll talk to anybody. As a basketball player, I believe I’m very versatile. I can guard multiple positions. I’m a strong wing with the ability to shoot it and drive it. I want to be an exciting player and be fun to watch.”

What’s Thompson most looking forward to?

“Just networking and getting to know people,” Thompson said. “There are people from all over (at Stanford). I’m just excited to meet new people and build relationships.”

It’s apparent that Thompson’s decision goes beyond just basketball and the young man is wise beyond his years.
