Jedd Fisch explains why Will Rogers was named Washington's starting quarterback
Will Rogers will continue being a collegiate starter with Washington’s decision to name him as their quarterback on Monday.
During his press conference yesterday, Jedd Fisch explained that choice of Rogers to open things up. He said that the veteran aspects of his game and his approach in their offense were what set him apart. They’ll now hopefully be what can make a difference for an all-new group of Huskies this fall.
“I think Will from the very beginning showed a command, a maturity. He has a ton of experience. We felt that, with a team of inexperience, it’s a nice thing to have a lot of experience at that position,” said Fisch. “Will has certainly shown that he has great leadership abilities. He has certainly embraced learning this offense and then has continued to improve week in and week out, day in and day out.”
Rogers won this job after transferring in following a prolific four-year as quarterback at Mississippi State. In that time, he set program and conference records in single games, seasons, and in a career as a passer for the Bulldogs. With that, he in total posted 1,301 completions at a 69.3% rate for 12,315 yards, 94 touchdowns, and 28 interceptions.

After his senior season in Starkville, Rogers entered his name into the portal and transferred to Seattle in December. He did so as the No. 15 QB and No. 80 overall player in On3’s 2024 Transfer Portal Top Players.
Still, this pick wasn’t without competition with him having to compete against Demond Williams Jr.. The former recruit turned No. 19 QB transfer followed Fisch from Arizona to Washington this offseason. He too is now set to potentially play a role this season as well.

It was a healthy battle between Rogers and Williams Jr. with Fisch seeing that they’ve bonded during it.
“(Rogers) has had somebody that’s really, really good nipping at his heels every single day,” said Fisch. “They make a great pair. They’ve certainly become very good friends. They’ve gotten to really build a great relationship.”
Rogers came to Washington and then decided to stay there amidst the coaching change over the past few months. That has ended up in him winning the starting job for the program heading into their opener this weekend against Weber State.
“In the end, we felt like, at this moment in time, for this game, certainly, Will was the right guy to lead the team,” said Fisch.
