Jeff Brohm opens up on accepting Louisville head coaching job
Jeff Brohm went back home to take over the Louisville Cardinals football program. The former Purdue coach said he wanted a new challenge in his coaching career, but while he was eager to take on the new job, Brohm did not exactly want to leave the Boilermakers. He explained when joining Sirius XM ESPNU Radio.
“Well, it’s kind of like (the) stars aligned,” Brohm said. “You know, I really loved where I was at. I thought we made some strides working with some really great people as a great community, loved our players, coaches and administration fans. So, you know, this came about and it’s just one of those things where the timing seemed right.
“I felt like I helped Purdue get to a better place. We put a lot of work into that and I felt very good about the progress we made, but I think it was time for a new challenge and that challenge was to go back home, to help the hometown team. Find ways to improve, get better, try to compete for a championship and I know that we’re going to work really hard to try to get that done.”
Brohm was asked if anything got a little easier knowing he went back home to coach the Cardinals.
“Well, I think so,” Brohm said. “You know, I think it’s important that people know that this place means a lot to me. And you know why I made a change to take this job. I don’t like change. I never have and I’ve never really looked to do that. And as I make this change, I think the players that are coming in and beyond that, I’m gonna be here as long as they keep me. I’m really not ever looking to go anywhere else.”

Essentially it’s the dream job for Brohm. He is 66-44 overall as a head coach with Western Kentucky and Purdue and went 36-34 with the Boilermakers and led them to the Big Ten Championship Game this season. Brohm played for Louisville from 1989-93.
“We’re going to try to help build this program up and … have some fun doing it,” Brohm said. “We’re gonna play the game aggressively, let our players know that we’re going to help them make a name for themselves. You know, this is my hope and I know everything about it. I know what the fans want to see, they want to see wins. They want to see excitement. They want to see people play with passion for the game. And you know this is where I want to be without question. I think our recruits and our players on our team will understand that as we continue through this process.”
