ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips took questions during ACC Media Days. There, he made sure to lighten the mood a little by trolling a reporter over the recent Chicago Cubs series against the Baltimore Orioles.

It was Josh Graham who took the time to ask Jim Phillips about the 12-team College Football Playoff and if there has been any talk about expanding it and what that might look like. However, Phillips decided that it was better to use that as an opportunity to crack jokes about baseball.

“It’s good to see you, Josh,” Jim Phillips said. “I just want to say this. Josh is a really big Baltimore Orioles fan and he was like crushing me with a text. He was going to see the Cubs play, Chicago Cubs play at Camden Yards in Baltimore. Cubs aren’t having a great season. The Orioles are certainly having a great season. Then I haven’t heard from him until this morning.”

Jim Phillips is a Chicago native who previously worked in the area while he was at Northwestern, making it clear where his connection to the team comes from. The Cubs and Orioles played a little before the All-Star break. Even though the Orioles were favorites in the series, Chicago swept Baltimore, shutting the Orioles out twice in the process. In the end, the aggregate score for the series was 21-2.

Despite the Cubs being a disappointing 48-53 this season and the Orioles being 60-39, sports are weird and those upsets do happen. When they do happen in your favor, you have to take advantage of it and make sure everyone knows your team won. That’s exactly what Jim Phillips did.

“I thought he was in the witness protection program. Not that everyone would know, but the Cubs went to Baltimore and swept all three games. It wasn’t even close. So, good to see you. Do I need to answer that question?”

Ultimately, Jim Phillips had very little to say about possibly expanding the College Football Playoff again. Instead, he emphasized that he values protecting the ACC’s access and the health of athletes in a potentially long season.

In the end, the Orioles fan reporter is probably going to have the better MLB season when it’s all said and done. After all, Baltimore currently has the best record in the American League and is considered by many people a favorite to win the World Series. Chicago, meanwhile, is expected to sell off some of its talented players at the trade deadline and begin a rebuilding process.
