Veteran Mavericks guard JJ Reddick wasted little time in claiming a piece of fellow teammate, NBA superstar Luka Doncic’s new contract. Reddick posted this mostly joking tweet to Twitter shortly after the news was announced.
How Doncic and Reddick became teammates
The 22-year-old Slovenian superstar signed a five-year, $207 million supermax rookie contract extension, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Doncic has been on a cosmic rise in notoriety since being drafted to the NBA in 2018. He has won rookie of the year and has been named to two first-team all-NBA selections. Because of his two selections, he is the first-ever rookie designated for the rookie max extension. The extension does come with a player option in the final year of the contract. Luka was originally drafted by the Atlanta Hawks, but a draft-day trade saw him exchanged for a first-round pick and fellow guard Trae Young.

JJ Reddick joined Luka Doncic on The Mavericks in late March just before the NBA trade deadline. Reddick was traded from the Pelicans along with teammate Nicolo Melli for James Johnson, Wes Iwundu and a 2021 second-round pick. Reddick was one of the leaders in the young Pelicans locker room. However, at the time of the trade, Reddick was dealing with a heel injury. He played in only 13 games for Dallas after the trade, but ended up getting shut down for the rest of the season after re-aggravating the injury against the Memphis Grizzlies. The 15-year veteran has been on six teams throughout his career. Reddick was the 11th pick by the Orlando Magic in the 2006 NBA draft.
Building Chemistry
Reddick and Doncic will look to expand on their chemistry next year on the court as well. Coming off a thrilling game seven defeat against the Los Angeles Clippers, The Mavericks will look to make a deeper playoff run this upcoming year. With Reddick coming back healthy next year that will give the Mavericks some much-needed firepower coming off the bench. With Doncic’s new contract keeping him in Dallas for another five years, he and Reddick will have plenty of time to joke and compete for an NBA title. Dallas finished last season fifth in the West with a record of 42-30 and won the Southwest division.
