Ole Miss safety Jon Haynes entered the NCAA transfer portal Monday, On3 has learned.

Haynes was a starter for the Rebels the past two seasons but appeared to be in line for a lesser role this season, especially with former Navy transfer Jake Springer now eligible after sitting out the 2020 season.

Haynes, a former junior college transfer, finished 2020 with 31 tackles and an interception after recording 55 tackles and an interception in 2019.

Even with Haynes gone, the Rebels have plenty of experience in their secondary in addition to adding Springer. Haynes is the only defensive back who started multiple games for Ole Miss last season who won’t be with the team when the Rebels open camp.

Here are a couple of other Monday morning notes:

  • Former Texas A&M linebacker Ke’Shun Brown is expected to transfer to South Alabama, a source told On3. It’s a noteworthy pickup for new coach Kane Wommack and the Jaguars. Brown, a Montgomery, Ala., native, is a former four-star recruit with four years of eligibility remaining. He redshirted at A&M in 2019, then opted out last season.
  •  NC State is hiring former North Carolina special teams coordinator and outside linebackers coach Scott Boone as an analyst, On3 reported over the weekend. Boone is a former defensive coordinator at Nevada and William & Mary and also has worked at Wake Forest and Arizona. With Boone joining the staff, coach Dave Doeren’s group at NC State now includes six position coaches or support staffers who have been either an FBS head coach (Joker Phillips and Ruffin McNeill) or an FBS coordinator (Boone, Kurt Roper, Joe DeForest and Brian Mitchell).
