Justin Fields petitions Chicago Bears to draft Jaxon Smith-Njigba
Justin Fields petitioned for a former Ohio State teammate to be drafted by the Chicago Bears. Fields revealed on Pardon My Take he would love to see Jaxon Smith-Njigba in a Bears uniform this season.
The two played together at Ohio State and Smith-Njigba truly broke out during the 2021 season. However, the Buckeyes star receiver was limited to just three games last fall due to injuries.
That did not change Fields’ mind about the Bears’ draft plans.
“I’m going with my man Jaxon Smith-Njigba,” Fields said of what he would do in the first round. “I’ve seen him in action. I’ve seen how he can separate himself like that and you know his body control is crazy and you know, he didn’t get to play this past year. He didn’t get to show what he could do.
“So, you know, I’m hoping he falls to us somehow. But we do have some help that we need in the trenches. So you know, a lot of people are talking about us taking Jalen Carter or Will Anderson Jr., so we’ll see. We’ll see what happens. So I’m guessing we’ll get one of those guys and you know, maybe some guys in free agency but one guy that I would love to have is Jaxon Smith-Njigba.”
Before Smith-Njigba suffered his injury, he was regarded as one of, if not the best wide receiver in college football.
He finished his college career (22 games, 15 starts) with 109 catches, 1,691 yards, 10 touchdowns and 15.5 yards per catch.

Could Bears draft Jaxon Smith-Njigba for Justin Fields?
Despite the chatter after Smith-Njigba’s injury, like being able to play in the College Football Playoff, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day dismissed that notion.
“I know that there’s been a lot of speculation about, you know, him being able to play towards the end, but he was told to shut it down,” Day said. “And so that was hard for him and a lot of respect for Jackson. You know, Jordan fought to come back and now he’s gonna get really strong in the offseason and ready to go.
“I think our guys have handled it really well. I think we have some of the best in the country. There’s just some things like this that happen along the way and you try to do the best you can but overall, I think we’ve done as good as anybody over the past few years.”
A pairing of Fields and Smith-Njigba on the Bears would be a sight to see. It would certainly give Chicago a legit No. 1 receiver and could help the team take strides in 2023.
