Kane Wommack identifies Kalen DeBoer's 'superpower,' how it impacted decision to join staff
Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack will follow Kalen DeBoer into battle any day. On Monday, Wommack raved about the Crimson Tide head coach’s leadership qualities.
“One of the things that’s always impressed me about Kalen is whether you’re game planning or hanging out on the back porch on a pool night or in the fourth quarter in the middle of a big game, he’s the same guy,” Wommack said. “That is a super power. It really is for him.
“The way he’s able to keep the main thing the main thing amidst all the noise is something that I think has served him really well as a head coach and served him well as a coordinator. I think our players lean into that humble confidence he shows in those moments.
“You don’t take the Alabama job after Coach Saban if you don’t have a certain level of confidence about you but there’s a level of humility that he carries himself that I think Greg Byrne made the perfect hire, in terms of what Kalen brings to the table for this team and carrying on the legacy that certainly Coach Saban has set and other greats before him, as well.”

Before taking over at South Alabama, Wommack spent three seasons at Indiana, in two of which he was the defensive coordinator. Wommack met DeBoer at Indiana when he served as the program’s offensive coordinator during the 2019 season.
When he was offered the opportunity to reunite with DeBoer, Kane Wommack couldn’t pass it up.
“Knowing that was a huge reason why I wanted to come here,” Wommack said of DeBoer’s leadership. “I loved my opportunity and loved my time at South Alabama and enjoyed my time being a head coach.
“But I think some of those things, being in the foxhole with him and seeing the confidence that he carries day in and day out was something that I wanted to be a part of his staff here, as well. So, I’m excited to go through the foxhole again with him.”
DeBoer will make his debut at the helm of Alabama on Saturday when the Crimson Tide takes on Western Kentucky at 7 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast on ESPN.
