Each week, On3 selects national head coaches of the week.

Our Power Five head coach of the week for Week 9 is Kansas’ Lance Leipold.

Despite being without star QB Jalon Daniels, Leipold led the Jayhawks to a 38-33 upset of No. 6 Oklahoma. It was Kansas’ first win over a top-10 team since 2008, its first regular season victory over a top-10 team since 1995 and its first home win over a top-10 team since 1984.

It was also the Jayhawks’ first victory over the Sooners since 1997.

“This is about a team and building a program, doing it the right way, stacking wins, helping us in recruiting everything, helping us in fundraising,” Leipold said. “… It’s about a staff that works hard, administration that supports us, all the things that you want and that you need for a program like ours to be able to compete and beat a team like Oklahoma.”

After posting an overall record of just 23-118 from 2010 to 2021, Kansas is now 12-9 the last two seasons under Leipold, including 6-2 this year.
