Kansas football kicked its 2024 season off on a high note, defeating Lindenwood 48-3 in its 2024 season opener on Thursday.

Droves of Jayhawks fans made the trip over to Kansas City for the matchup inside Children’s Mercy Park — including the Kansas Men’s Basketball team. The entire team showed up to support their football family.

The team was able to put on a showcase for the men’s basketball team, which included stars like Hunter Dickinson and Dajuan Harris, ultimately dismantling Lindenwood in the program’s very first game against an FBS opponent in the school’s history.

Of course, similar dominance is expected out of this year’s Jayhawks team on the hardwood — but they won’t be able put their skills on display until later this fall.

In the mean time, Kansas fans were treated to a strong start of the year for the Jayhawks on the gridiron.

The fireworks didn’t start right away. Kansas running back Devin Neal scored the first two touchdowns of the game within the five-yard line following long, methodical drives by the Jayhawks.

Midway through the second quarter, defensive back Mello Dotson got the crowd on their feet with a 33-yard pick-six to push the lead to three scores. Kansas would go on to score two more touchdowns before the end of the half.

One of those included a highlight-reel, 58-yard pitch by quarterback Jalon Daniels to wideout Luke Grimm to help give Kansas a 34-0 lead at the break. The Jayhawks would score one touchdown in each quarter in the second half to finish things off.

Daniels finished the game 9 of 15 for 148 yards, one touchdown and an interception and did not see much action in the second half due to Kansas’ inflated lead. Grimm lead all wide receivers with six catches for 111 yards and the touchdown. Neal finished the game with eight carries for 112 yards — including breaking free on a 53-yarder earlier in the matchup.

The Jayhawks men’s basketball program likely won’t be in Champaign, IL for the team’s upcoming road trip, as the football program is headed there for their Week 2 matchup vs. Illinois next weekend. Kickoff is set for Saturday, Sept. 7 live on FS1.
