Kansas State point guard Dug McDaniel has entered the NCAA transfer portal, On3’s Joe Tipton reported. He spent just one season with the Wildcats after transferring from Michigan and will have one year of eligibility remaining.

McDaniel started 23 of 32 games he appeared in for K-State in 2024-25. He averaged 11.4 points, 4.9 assists and 1.7 steals across 32.2 minutes per game.

Prior to this past season, he started in 52 of 60 games with the Wolverines. His best season came in 2023-24 when he led Michigan with 16.3 points, 4.7 assists per game and 3.7 rebounds per game. He was a 36.3% shooter from 3-point range during his two years in Ann Arbor.

McDaniel attended Paul VI Catholic High School (VA), where he was a four-star prospect in the 2022 class. He ranked as the No. 85 overall player and No. 12 point guard in the cycle according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Kansas State is coming off of a 16-17 season and failed to make the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year. McDaniel is the fifth Wildcats player overall and the second starter to enter the portal, joining guard Brendan Hausen. K-State has also added three players through the portal, with the highest-ranked of those being former Memphis PF Tyreek Smith.

The college basketball transfer portal officially opened for business on Monday, March 24, and will close on Tuesday, April 22. As of this writing, more than 1,000 players had already entered their names.

Last spring alone, 1,962 Division I players tested the portal waters. Based on the early numbers from this year, even more could follow. For the first time in history, more than half of the points scored in college basketball were scored by players from the transfer portal, not high school, in the 2024-25 season.

In data gathered over the first two years with transfer windows, the NCAA found most athletes enter the portal within the first four weeks of the portal opening. The study showed that 73% of men’s and women’s basketball undergraduate athletes entered during the first four weeks. That increased to 82% for men and 86% for women in 2024.
