Keith Patterson, three others injured in Abilene Christian bus crash released from hospital

Abilene Christian almost pulled off the win of Week 1, taking Texas Tech to overtime in Lubbock. A failed two-point conversion wound up being the difference as the Red Raiders escaped the dreaded FCS over FBS upset.
But the biggest story of Saturday night had nothing to do with football. The Abilene Christian bus got in a car accident just outside Jones AT&T Stadium, with a drunk driver causing the wreck. Multiple people were sent to the hospital as a result, all but one of which were involved in the program.
On Monday, an upset was provided as four people have since been released. One of those is head coach Keith Patterson, who was evaluated for multiple injuries but thankfully is already back at work. Another coach, a player, and the driver of the bus were admitted to the hospital too.
“Head football coach Keith Patterson was evaluated for pain in his hip and leg and was released soon after,” a statement from ACU said. “He was back at work in Abilene on Sunday. Linebackers coach Conor Dubin was evaluated for a suspected concussion. MRI results came back clear. He was hospitalized Saturday night, Sunday, and was discharged on Monday morning.
“Student-athlete Sam Mason Jr. was evaluated for a cut and a bruise on his head and was released soon after. Bus driver Darryl Kelley was evaluated for possible broken ribs, and underwent medical tests which came back clear. He was hospitalized Saturday night, Sunday and was discharged on Monday.”

19-year-old Parker Young was taken into custody on Sunday morning over the incident and charged with a DWI. At the time of posting, no further information regarding Young’s status has been released.
Abilene Christian does have a game to play on Saturday, hosting West Georgia at Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium. It’s the first United Athletics Conference game of the season as only FCS opponents remain on the 2024 schedule.
Patterson being back at work is an excellent sign, with Dubin potentially dealing with a concussion. Mason having just a cut and bruise on his head leaves his status for the West Georgia game in question. A scary situation for everyone involved but for the most part, everybody seems to be okay.
