Kellie Harper, Kyra Elzy discuss what went right and wrong in first half of Tennessee-Kentucky game
Through one half of play, Kentucky and Tennessee tussled to a two-point margin with the Volunteers narrowly leading the rival Wildcats.
SEC Network sideline reporter Brooke Weisbrod was able to catch up with the head coaches of each time throughout a competitive first two quarters. After one quarter, with her team leading, UK head coach Kyra Elzy discussed Brooklynn Miles and her unselfishness by taking charges.
“Well, we need it. We talked about charges, those are momentum-changing plays that we need,” said Elzy. And just after her interview, Miles drew another Tennessee charge to open the second quarter. Otherwise, though, Elzy liked the defense but wanted to see the ‘Cats clean up the glass and tighten their coverage on shooters.
“You know, I thought we let some shooters get loose. We got to finish our defense with a rebound.”
By halftime, it was Tennessee who led by a bucket, 28-26, and head coach Kellie Harper credited the Lady Vols’ defense in the second period for the difference.

“Well we did a better job to start the second quarter, I think, defensively,” she commented. Offensively, Harper says: “we just got to make some shots on the other end of the court.”
Like Elzy mentioned Kentucky needing to do a better job rebounding, Harper noted it as a strong point for her group in the first half.
“Well, I think we did a good job there of getting the defensive boards on misses,” Harper said. “You know, just got to keep making shots tough for them and maybe try to find some better looks for us.”
