Tempers flare in Kentucky vs. Louisville after Brandon Garrison foul
In the second half of Saturday’s rivalry game, tempers flared between Kentucky and Louisville. Brandon Garrison was called for a foul on Reyne Smith, and the two teams gathered in front of the UL bench before the referees reviewed the situation.
Garrison and Smith went for a loose ball, and Garrison ended up walking over him. As he tried to walk away, he got pushed from behind as Smith’s teammates tried to help him up, and it led to a scrum in front of the bench.
The officials went to the monitor, and referee Pat Adams announced the referees wouldn’t call any more fouls. Garrison received a common foul, and play continued.
Saturday’s game marked the start of a new era for the Kentucky-Louisville rivalry. Both programs underwent high-profile coaching changes, with Mark Pope succeeding John Calipari and Pat Kelsey taking over for Kenny Payne. That added to the anticipation of the matchup, and players on the new-look rosters also knew just how much the game means to both fan bases.

“I think we get it more from the people, like BBN, I would say, you know?” Koby Brea said, via KSR’s Jack Pilgrim. “The fans, the people that we talk to every single day walking to class, even in the summer when we would do the little meet-and-greets. You kind of just see it, everybody throwing the Ls down and stuff like that. You start to see how serious it is, how serious it is to the people out here.
“As a player, you want to be a part of it. We know how big of a rivalry this is, it’s one of the biggest rivalries in history of sports. For us, that’s something that we really want to be a part of. The only way to do it right is to be all in on it, you know what I mean? That’s something that we’re super excited for, and honestly, we can’t wait for it.”
Louisville kept pace with No. 5-ranked Kentucky throughout the contest until the Wildcats pulled away in the final minutes. UK sealed the 93-85 victory to improve to 10-1 on the year while the Cardinals dropped to 6-5 to start Kelsey’s tenure at UL.
