The No. 3 seed Iowa State Cyclones got some horrible news shortly after the brackets were revealed on Sunday night. Their star guard, Keshon Gilbert, will miss the upcoming NCAA Tournament due to what he called a groin injury, according to a story from Pete Thamel of ESPN.

Gilbert has been one of the most complete players in America this season, averaging 13.4 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game. He’s also connected on 33.3% of his shots from beyond-the-arc and averaging 1.7 steals per outing.

Gilbert missed four out of Iowa State’s past seven games because of the groin injury. He leads the team in both assists and minutes per game. He’s also the Cyclones second-leading scorer. That means it will officially be the end of a very decorated career for the star senior.

It’s a crippling blow to the Cyclones roster (24-9 overall), who earned a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament and will have to play No. 14 Lipscomb in Milwaukee. If the Cyclones manage to advance, they’ll face the winner of the No. 5 Ole Miss/No. 11 San Diego State matchup.

In the article from Thamel, ISU head coach TJ Otzelberger also had some good news. Guard Tamin Lipsey (lower body) should return for the NCAA Tourney after he missed their Big 12 Tournament loss to the BYU Cougars on Thursday. “We fully anticipate he’ll be ready to go for our game on Friday,” Otzelberger explained. Lipsey averages 10.8 points for Iowa State.

Keshon Gilbert was dealing with the groin injury in the Big 12 Tournament. He played against the Cincinnati Bearcats on Wednesday but missed their game against the BYU Cougars on Thursday. “We decided that he needs to focus on his rehab and getting his body back right,” Otzelberger explained on Sunday in Ames, Iowa.

In the 2023-2024 campaign, Gilbert was dominant propelling the Cyclones to the 2024 Big 12 Tournament title. He brought home 2024 Big 12 Championship MVP honors, and he also landed on the 2024 Big 12 Championship All-Tournament Team. Before transferring to Iowa State, he spent two years with the UNLV Rebels.
