Kip Lewis exits game with injury in third quarter vs. Houston
Oklahoma linebacker Kip Lewis suffered an injury on the first play of the second half of Saturday’s contest against Houston. Lewis appeared to run into teammate Kani Walker as both attempted to make a tackle on the play.
The redshirt sophomore remained on the ground for several moments as trainers tended to him. He eventually had to be helped off the field and was taken to the injury tent.
Lewis was having a solid day so far prior to the injury. The linebacker had recorded three tackles for a Sooners team that gave up only 6 points in the first half.
Jaren Kanak entered the game in place of Lewis on the next couple of drive. Oklahoma is currently clinging to a 14-12 lead with 1:07 remaining in the third quarter, and Lewis has now returned.

With Lewis now back, the Oklahoma defense will look to hang on for the win with the fourth quarter coming up. He totaled 66 tackles for the Sooners last season, so he’s certainly a key piece of their unit.

Brent Venables on Oklahoma’s performance vs. Houston: ‘We deserved to lose’
Oklahoma would hang on for a 16-12 victory against the Cougars, but not without several close calls. Sooners coach Brent Venables did not hold back in his assessment of the team postgame, admitting they were lucky to emerge victorious.
On a day where its offense struggled immensely, failing to score any points at all in the second half, the defense came up big late to force a safety. They also got the final stop of the game to secure the win.
“We certainly deserved to lose as well, but our guys did find a way,” Venables said. “Great job on the defensive play to create the safety. Offense did a really nice job until we lost our mind and didn’t play with the discipline.
“We deserved to lose because we did everything you could possibly do to give somebody a chance to win. But they did find a way to win there. Great job by the D again there on that last drive to make them use the clock and get off the field with a victory.”
