Kirby Smart left the depth chart at quarterback undetermined following a question about the backup for Georgia.

During his press conference on Tuesday, Smart received a direction question about Gunner Stockton being the backup for the Bulldogs. Rather than name him as that, he elected to talk about the entire collection of players they have there instead. That was the case since he knows they have more options there than usual.

“You know, we have a group of quarterbacks that have done a great job,” said Smart. “I think we’ve got depth at the quarterback position that we’re not used to having in terms of guys that have experience. Some guys that are young, some guys have played like Gunner and Jaden. They’ve done a tremendous job.”

However, Stockton has still impressed in his own right over fall camp in Athens. He has, per Smart, actually had great outings in each of the pair of scrimmages for the ‘Dawgs. That includes his best one to date in their most recent one on Saturday.

“Gunner has had two of his better scrimmages and probably his best scrimmage since being here in the last one,” Smart noted.

DawgsHQ’s Jake Rowe also recognized Stockton’s play from this weekend based on intel from the game. Per his assessment, it could be enough to have secured him the backup quarterback spot behind Carson Beck but ahead of Jaden Rashada and Ryan Puglisi. Stockton’s experience entering year three as compared to this being the first for the other pair also factors in.

Stockton made his first collegiate appearances las season as a reserve behind Beck as well as Brock Vandagriff. In those opportunities, he completed a dozen passes at 63.2% completion for 148 yards, two touchdowns, and an interceptions.

With training camp essentially over, one of the only things left for the Bulldogs is finalizing their lineups. That still needs to be decided at quarterback too with a handful of names, including Stockton, having battled for spots at QB2, QB3, and QB4.

“I’m really pleased with where all those guys are,” said Smart.

Smart provides injury updates on Roderick Robinson, Colbie Young, Xzavier McLeod

Kirby Smart provided some key injury updates on Tuesday amid fall camp according to Jake Rowe of Dawg’s HQ. That included new statuses on RB Roderick Robinson, WR Colbie Young, and DL Xzavier McLeod.

Smart said that there is no timeline for Robinson’s return aftet missing some time recently due to turf toe. According to Rowe, Robinson was jogging at practice late last week but did not dress out or condition during Georgia’s most recent scrimmage.

Smart went on to add that they’re trying to get Young back on the field. He missed both of Georgia’s scrimmages during fall camp following a hamstring injury.

In regards to McLeod, though, Smart did not disclose the extent or specifics of his injury but said that they are trying to get him back as well.
