The SEC has been kicking around the idea of mandatory injury reports for weeks and Georgia coach Kirby Smart might have shared a little more insight on where things are at in a press conference on Tuesday night.

Smart revealed his understanding is the SEC will implement a procedure for mandatory injury reports for conference games only.

“My only opinion on where it is is what I’ve been told, which is the conference games will have it,” Smart told reporters. “I’m great with it, as long as we’re all doing it I have no issue with it. I don’t think, I mean I don’t look at it as I think they’re going to tie fines to it and things like that.”

For now, the league hasn’t officially announced anything other than to note mandatory injury reports are under consideration.

The league was batting back and forth various proposals, hoping to settle on something before the year begins. But nothing official has been announced just yet.

There are some obvious upsides to doing so.

“It’s the same as the NFL’s,” Smart explained. “They’ve done it for years and it keeps some pressure off our kids from people reaching out to them trying to get information for betting sites and try to gain information there. There is no gain if you’ve got accurate information. So it protects our kids, I’m for it.”

A more cynical mind might wonder if eliminating some gamesmanship that goes on with injuries is also an intended part of adopting mandatory injury reports.

Smart seemed to brush back generally against the idea that at least he has ever been coy about injuries intentionally.

“I just want to say can the guy play or not and if it’s a gametime decision, he goes out and works out and he can’t, then he can’t,” Smart said. “I think everybody tries to make this big deal about deception or misleading. If I don’t know if a guy can play, then I’ve got to find out before the game. If he can play then he’s going to go out there and play. But I mean we’ve had countless number of guys that have gone out before the game to work out to find out if they can play or not, and we’ll abide by the rules they give us.”
