Kirby Smart reacts to Notre Dame fans chanting 'we want Georgia' on College GameDay
Georgia head coach Kirby Smart appeared on ESPN College GameDay Friday afternoon ahead of the in-state showdown between Indiana and Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff.
The winner of the matchup between the Hoosiers and Irish will face Georgia in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1. It was tough to hear Smart when he was talking, as Notre Dame fans chanted repeatedly in the background, “We want Georgia!”
Kirby Smart was asked about the “We want Georgia!” chants and shared that Notre Dame should not be thinking about the Bulldogs yet.
“Well, they’ve gotta worry about their first game, first. That’s for sure,” Kirby Smart said. “Then we’ve gotta worry about ourselves. That’s what we’ve gotta do. We’ve gotta get better ourselves. We’ve been working really hard here. Our kids have had a great attitude about practice and I’ve been excited about it.”
Kirby Smart and his Georgia staff have been preparing for both Indiana and Notre Dame ahead of the College Football Playoff. This is a unique situation as this is the first time a team has had a bye in the playoff.
“We spent a couple of days on each team,” Smart said. “That was very unique for us, because we’ve never had two teams to work on. So we did work on each team. And we’ll have a lot of recruits in town tonight. We’ll get to watch the game with some prospects and some of our young mid-years who are in town. So I’ll be watching in enjoyment.”
Smart added that he has been impressed by both Notre Dame and Indiana on film, although he revealed that the two teams are very different.

“We took Notre Dame and Purdue, I’m sorry, Notre Dame and Indiana, and we worked on both those teams,” Smart said. “We worked a day on each. And to be honest with you, I’m looking forward to this matchup, because both teams are very different.”
ESPN College GameDay host Rece Davis got the Notre Dame fans fired up before the interview with Smart ended as he took a shot at the Fighting Irish.
“Kirby, they were chanting they want Georgia, I’m not sure they do — winless all time against the Bulldogs,” Rece Davis said.
The Bulldogs are 3-0 all time against Notre Dame. We will see if the two have another matchup in a couple of weeks.
