Kirk Herbstreit believes Georgia, Texas are on a 'different level'
Two weeks into the 2024 season, Georgia and Texas might possess the best wins across the country. Both took down national powers in impressive fashion, as the Bulldogs beat Clemson and Steve Sarkisian‘s bunch won in Ann Arbor against Michigan. Statements have certainly been made.
A lot of football is still to be played but ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit believes Georgia and Texas are on a “different level” than everybody else in college football. The SEC programs enjoyed successful 2023 seasons and have come out swinging in 2024.
“I think it’s obvious right now that Georgia and Texas kind of look like they’re at a different level,” Herbstreit said. “… Georgia, the way we thought about Texas last week, that’s how we felt about Georgia Week 1.”
Even if Texas is being discussed the most at the moment, they actually are not ranked higher heading into Week 3 of the season. In On3’s latest College Football Rankings, powered by the Massey Ratings, Georgia takes the No. 1 overall spot while Texas is just behind. The gap is pretty significant too, with UGA’s score being at 9.28 and Texas at 9.13.

While Alabama is at No. 3, Herbstreit believes Ohio State is the one who can match the other two going forward. The Buckeyes still are considered to win the Big Ten this season and earn a bye in the College Football Playoff.
Only issue is — Ohio State has yet to be challenged against a big-named team. Akron and Western Michigan are not games in which you judge the Buckeyes. The schedule will begin to pick up quite soon with Big Ten play beginning on Sept. 28.

“It’s very hard to evaluate Ohio State because they haven’t played anybody yet,” Herbstreit said. “They look the part. So, I guess it’s not fair to count them out. I think we’ll find out when they play Iowa and when they go out to Euguene.”
Until Ohio State does line up against Iowa or Oregon, it’s going to be Georgia and Texas for Herbstreit.
The former has a tougher matchup on Saturday, heading to Lexington for an SEC matchup against Kentucky. Texas has an in-state opponent but is expected to win comfortably against UTSA.
Oct. 19 might wind up being the biggest game of the 2024 season when Georgia heads to Austin to face Texas. Multiple hurdles will have to be cleared by both teams before getting there but after two weeks, stars are aligning for a fun one.
