Following an action-packed Week 4 of College Football, a slew of teams made their mark on the national scene. So College GameDay analyst Kirk Herbstreit selected seven teams that he was most impressed with from the weekend of games, including several surprising entries.

Take a look at which teams “Herbie” thought turned in the best performances of the week:

Kirk Herbstreit’s top performing teams from Week 4

1. Kansas State | won AT Oklahoma, 41-34

The Wildcats in purple and gray took the top spot on his list after going into Norman and handling the Sooners to give head coach Brent Venables his first loss of the season and of his tenure as OU coach. A shocking upset, and on the road, too. Heck of a win for the K-State program, players and fans. You just don’t win at Oklahoma very often. If ever.

2. Texas Tech | won 37-34 vs. Texas

Tech has made a habit of beating Big 12 rival Texas over recent years. The latest installment in the rivalry featured the Red Raiders besting the Longhorns and a run-and-gun 37-34 barn-burner (possibly literally for some Texas fans). Big upset win in Lubbock to remind Texas that they may not be as back as they think.

3. Middle Tennessee | won 45-31 AT Miami

We just discussed the Red Raiders, so how about the Blue ones from Middle Tennessee. Who went on the road and thumped the Miami Hurricanes by two touchdowns, scoring a 99-yard touchdown and several other long bombs in the process. Just a butt-kicking by a mid-major team on the road vs. what was supposed to be a national title contender.

4. Notre Dame | won 45-32 AT North Carolina

Finally, somebody held Drake Maye and the UNC offense to less than five touchdowns…but barely. Notre Dame desperately needed a decent win and got it in the form of a two-possession road win vs. the Tar Heels

5. Minnesota | won 34-7 AT Michigan State

Michigan State was one of the top Big 10 teams a year ago. No longer the case in 2022. PJ Fleck’s program came to East Lansing and left it like Barbarians did the Roman Empire. 34-7 and a pile of rubble. A commanding win for one of the more solid programs in that entire conference over the last handful of seasons.

6. James Madison | won 32-28 AT Appalachian State

App State’s roller-coaster 2022 campaign trudges on. After winning at Texas A&M, then returning home to win on a Hail Mary vs. Troy, the Mountaineers did their best Falcons impression, blowing a 28-3 lead at home to lose to James Madison 32-28. Good for JMU, who advanced to 3-0 with wins over App State, obviously, as well as a 44-7 stomping of aforementioned Middle Tennessee. The Dukes can play.

7. Southern Miss | won 64-10 vs. Northwestern State

A bit of an odd addition. Riding a two game losing streak to Miami and Liberty, Southern Miss rebounded with a 64-10 drumming of FCS school Northwestern State. Such a dominant outing that Herbie tipped his cap to the Golden Eagles on this list.

There you have it. Kirk Herbstreit’s top performing teams of Week 4.
