Putting Penn State at the top of his list was probably pretty easy for Kirk Herbstreit. The Nittany Lions traveled to play Auburn, a team that many people felt was more talented than them. It was a game that Penn State won handily.
After that, Kirk Herbstreit lists four teams coming off incredibly frustrating 2021 seasons. Tulane struggled following a hurricane that displaced the program. Kansas and Florida State were both in the middle of rebuilds. Then Washington, fell apart under Jimmy Lake who was fired mid-season. Through Week 3, they’re all unbeaten. In Week 3 they all beat Power 5 opponents, except Kansas who beat a Houston team that was favored by more than a touchdown.
For their part, Oregon started the season by getting destroyed by Georgia. They bounced back, though, beating a ranked BYU team in Week 3. After getting early College Football Playoff talk surrounding the Cougars, this was no small task for the Ducks.

Kirk Herbstreit rounded out his list with two programs that you don’t normally think of as top performers, Eastern Michigan and Rice. However, they both had great weekends. Eastern Michigan traveled to Arizona State, where they won and Herm Edwards was fired following the game. Meanwhile, Rice beat Louisiana, breaking the longest active FBS winning streak at 15 games.
Now, as college football transitions to Week 4, it’ll be interesting to see if any of these teams can repeat as a top performer, or if they’re replaced by a new program.
