Kirk Herbstreit ranks top seven coaches from college football Week 6
Week 6 of the college football season was one full of upsets, with four top-10 teams getting beat on Saturday. A few more ranked teams went down in the process too, blowing the College Football Playoff picture wide open.
To celebrate, Kirk Herbstreit decided to highlight seven coaches, all but one of which come from power conferences. Additionally, three are not a head coach with a trio of defensive coordinators receiving love from the ESPN analyst.
You can check out Herbstreit’s top-performing coaches from Week 6 down below.
1. Vanderbilt head coach Clark Lea
Was there ever another real candidate for the top spot? Likely not as Vanderbilt pulled off a historic upset against Alabama on Saturday.
Lea has been waiting for a signature win with Vanderbilt and certainly got one. This one will be remembered in Nashville for a long, long time.
2. Arkansas defensive coordinator Travis Williams
Arkansas taking down Tennessee was the second biggest storyline of the weekend. As highly praised as the Vols offense was heading into the game, Williams put together a great game plan to stop Nico Iamaleava.
Sam Pittman admitted after the game Williams’ unit was the reason Arkansas stayed in the game and ultimately won. A big-time performance from the defensive coordinator in a game the program needed.
3. Minnesota head coach PJ Fleck
Boats are once again being rowed at Minnesota as Fleck pulled off another upset victory, this time against the USC Trojans. A matchup some might not be too used to yet in the new-look Big Ten, the Gophers certainly made a statement.
Minnesota is now back to .500 at 3-3 record and Fleck believes his team is better than the record indicates. Based on how they performed against USC, it’s tough to argue.
4. Washington head coach Jedd Fisch
Not the national championship rematch anybody expected as confetti flew in Houston, Washington got the better of Michigan on Saturday. Fans stormed the field to celebrate taking down the No. 10 team in the country.
Fisch was off to a slow start, dropping two early games, including the Apple Cup. Getting this win may eliminate any sort of pressure as the Huskies have arrived in the Big Ten.

5. Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles
People enjoy joking about the Iowa offense but Ohio State really took it to them in Columbus, led by Knowles. The Hawkeyes had just 226 total yards and starting quarterback Cade McNamara threw for under 100 yards.
Turnovers were critical for the Buckeyes too, forcing five fumbles and recovering two. An interception is on the stat sheet too, a recipe for success — no matter the offensive opponent.
6. Army head coach Jeff Monken
Two service academies are rolling through six weeks and Herbstreit highlighted the Black Knights following a big win against Tulsa. It was an all-around effort from Monken’s squad, showing out on both sides of the ball.
Army is now beating opponents by an average of 28 points and looks like a real threat. No power conference team will want to see an option team down the road.
7. Florida defensive coordinator Austin Armstrong
UCF bolsters one of the top rushing attacks in college football, led by RJ Harvey. Running the ball well on the road is exactly what you need to pull off an upset.
Instead, Florida shut them down and put the ball in KJ Jefferson‘s hands. UCF ran for just 108 yards on 40 attempts, averaging 2.7 yards per carry. A number Armstrong will take 100 times out of 100.
