Kirk Herbstreit releases new Top Four, next two out following wild Week 2
Kirk Herbstreit has released his new top four plus two, adjusting his selections following a wild Week 2 of college football.
On Sunday, the ESPN College GameDay analyst revealed his choices via Twitter, featuring some popular picks.
“My early top 4 which will be very fluid until we get more results and intel. 1-@GeorgiaFootball 2-@OhioStateFB 3-@AlabamaFTBL 4-@UMichFootball Next 2 @USC_FB @ClemsonFB,” tweeted Herbstreit.
First, Herbstreit is continuing to rock with the Bulldogs, as Georgia hasn’t done anything to make anyone think they’re anything less than the top team in the country. Afterwards, Ohio State takes the second spot, as the Buckeyes built on their victory over Notre Dame with a win over Arkansas State.
Then, Alabama had immense trouble with Texas over the weekend, but Herbstreit still put the Crimson Tide at No. 3. Finally, rounding out his top four is the Michigan Wolverines, who haven’t faced the stiffest of competition yet but have taken care of business while figuring out their quarterback situation.
Additionally, Herbstreit is keeping his eye on the USC Trojans and Clemson Tigers, who have each impressed the ESPN analyst. Lincoln Riley and the Trojans dismantled the Stanford Cardinal on Saturday, while Clemson followed up their win over Georgia Tech with a victory in their home opener over Furman.
As you can see, Kirk Herbstreit is pointing out his top teams at the moment, and it’s tough to argue with his choices. Time will tell how often they change over the course of the season, but you’ll find no argument from most regarding his picks at the moment.
Paul Finebaum shakes up his top four College Football Playoff teams, picks one to file away
Moreover, Kirk Herbstreit’s ESPN colleague Paul Finebaum also shook up his top four College Football Playoff teams after a wild Week 2 of college football, while also choosing one team to keep an eye on moving forward.
First, Finebaum stated on Sportscenter that the Clemson Tigers are his No. 4 squad at the moment, stating, “Clemson I think doesn’t look great, but I still think overall this is a really good team when you factor in the ACC schedule.”

At No. 3, Finebaum debated Alabama and Ohio State for the spot, but ended up going with the Buckeyes. Of course, the Buckeyes at No. 3 means Finebaum slotted the Crimson Tide in at No. 2.
“Well, Alabama’s No. 2. That didn’t take long, did it? The Tide, going from 1 to 2,” stated Finebaum. “They’re pretty fortunate to be at No. 2, but there’s not a great replacement.”
Finally, Finebaum believes Georgia is picking up where they left off last season, having Kirby Smart’s squad as his No. 1 team.
“At No. 1, can we all say Georgia is right back where they left last season off? They’re the No. 1 team in the country, they have been flawless,” stated Finebaum. “They’ve given up I think a field goal. Stetson Bennett, yes he is in the Heisman race, after wondering why he came back.
“So it’s pretty amazing to watch the Dawgs in the first two weeks.”
Additionally, Finebaum stated that the college football world need not forget about Lincoln Riley out at USC, believing they’re turning some heads in Southern California.
So Paul Finebaum believes the Clemson Tigers, Ohio State Buckeyes, Alabama Crimson Tide and Georgia Bulldogs are the top four teams in the country at the moment following Week 2, but is keeping his eye on the USC Trojans. Time will tell if the SEC Network host is vindicated over the next few weeks, or if he’s forced to change up his rankings moving forward.
