ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit has named his list of top performing players from Week 2 of the college football season. At the top of the list is Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman after he threw for 300 yards and four touchdowns in a 45-25 win over Vanderbilt.

Rounding out his top-seven players of the week were Kansas State receiver Phillip Brooks, Michigan State linebacker Jacoby Windmon, Marshall running back Khalan Laborn, BYU receiver Chase Roberts, USC quarterback Caleb Williams and Texas Tech quarterback Donovan Smith.

While every player on Herbstreit’s list made a huge impact on their team’s effort, Brooks and Laborn drew attention for the unusual circumstances surrounding their wins.

Phillip Brooks only had three catches for 57 yards in Kansas State’s 40-12 win over Missouri, but his impact on the game after a lightning delay was suitably electric. Brooks broke the game wide open with a 76-yard punt return touchdown after the game resumed — setting up the Wildcats for their dominant finish.

Meanwhile, Marshall stunned Notre Dame with a 26-21 victory and gave the Fighting Irish their third straight loss to open the season. At the forefront of the win, Khalal Laborn rushed the ball 31 times for 161 yards and a touchdown.

Michigan State’s 52-0 win over Akron last week featured an incredible stat sheet by Jacoby Windmon. The pass rushing threat tallied up 2.5 tackles for a loss, 1.5 sacks and three forced fumbles in the win. The three forced fumbles was the most by a Spartans player since 2018, and he won Big Ten defensive player of the week honors for his work.
