Kirk Herbstreit reveals top performing coaches of Week 2
Week 2 of the college football season was a drama-filled one, with upsets occurring across the country and statements being made. To celebrate, ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit revealed his top-performing coaches from Saturday.
Herbstreit decided to highlight seven coaches, just five of which come from power conferences. Additionally, one is not a head coach with an SEC defensive coordinator receiving love from the ESPN analyst.
You can check out Herbstreit’s top-performing coaches from Week 2 down below.

1. Northern Illinois head coach Thomas Hammock
Upset of the weekend took place in South Bend when Northern Illinois shocked Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish were fresh off a massive season-opening win against Texas A&M on the road.
Hammock brought his players ready to play and got the victory. He was visibly emotional during his on-field postgame interview, showing what the moment meant to him and the entire NIU program.
2. Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian
Michigan-Texas was viewed as the premier matchup heading into Week 2. Two blue blood programs were meeting at the Big House, home of the reigning national championship.
However, the Longhorns got off to a quick start and never looked back. Sarkisian saw his offense have their way with the Michigan defense and control all four quarters.
3. Tennessee defensive coordinator Tim Banks
This is a game Herbstreit saw up close and personal, watching Tennessee dismantle NC State. A tone-setting victory for the Volunteers as momentum continues to build.
Tennessee’s offense is a known commodity at this point but Herbstreit was impressed with the performance Banks put together defensively. NC State put together just 143 yards of total offense, just 39 of which came on the ground.
4. ULM head coach Bryant Vincent
Through two games, ULM has matched its win total from a season ago. UAB came to town and headed back to Birmingham as a 32-6 loser after the Warhawks pulled away in the second half.
Vincent is in his first year in charge of the program and is already making an impression. A trip to Austin to face Sarkisian and Texas may be next but Vincent has brought excitement back to ULM.

5. South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer
A game both South Carolina and Kentucky felt like they needed, Beamer’s squad was the one who emerged as no-doubt winners. On the road nonetheless, being the second straight win in Lexington for the Gamecocks.
Beamer saw his defense continue to play at a high level while the offense made improvements in his eyes. South Carolina has plenty of tests ahead but they flew over the Kentucky hurdle with near ease at times.
6. Virginia head coach Tony Elliott
Heading into Saturday’s game against Wake Forest, Elliott had just two road ACC wins to his name since taking over at Virginia. You can now make it three after coming from behind in the fourth quarter to win.
Elliott is now in Year 3 with the Hoos, failing to surpass three wins in a single season thus far. He’s now up to two and could strive toward bowl eligibility for the first time since 2019.
7. Cal head coach Justin Wilcox
Nearly nobody expected Cal to enter SEC country and come away with a win against Auburn. The Golden Bears pulled off the upset, though, leaving Jordan-Hare Stadium shocked.
Wilcox is in the midst of his eighth season at Cal and arguably no win is more impressive than what he pulled off on Saturday. The long plane ride back home had to be well worth it.
