Kirk Herbstreit reveals what's at stake for Ryan Day, James Franklin in Ohio State at Penn State
ESPN brought College GameDay to Happy Valley ahead of Ohio State and Penn State, and Kirk Herbstreit is reveling in the gravity of Saturday’s Big Ten showdown.
Whoever gets the victory between the Buckeyes and the Nittany Lions will be in tremendous shape moving forward, but Herbstreit believes there’s even more at stake than positioning when it comes to the College Football Playoff. Both Ryan Day and James Franklin need a resume-boosting win, and a loss could be detrimental to their reputation in Week 10.
“The winning coach here is going to be in a great position. Things are going to be going well. They’re looking into the future,” Herbstreit stated. “(The) team that loses, the coach that loses — these guys that are cheering right now, there’s going to be a wrath for Penn State or Ohio State. Ryan Day is 2-7 against top five teams. If he loses his game, the Buckeye faithful are going to let — Ohio State fans (are going to) let him know. And if you look at what we’ve done here, I think what is (James Franklin), 1-12 against the top five?
“So, someone’s going to put a lot of that behind them, and someone’s going to have to continue to deal with it.”

While it’s always a huge showdown when Ohio State faces off against Penn State, it hasn’t been much of a competition as of late. The Nittany Lions have only defeated the Buckeyes twice since 2010 (2011, 2016) and while there’s been some close games, Ohio State and the aforementioned Day has reigned supreme.
With the ranked losses stacking up for Ryan Day, and the lack of big-time wins for James Franklin doing the same, somebody is going to be the beneficiary of Saturday’s game when it’s all said and done. Kirk Herbstreit recognizes that, and that’s why there’s so much pressure on the two coaches in Happy Valley.
