Kyle Peterson blasts umpires for ejecting Kevin Schnall, first base coach in CWS, Coastal Carolina vs. LSU

Coastal Carolina found itself at a disadvantage early in Game 2 of the College World Series against LSU, and not because they were trailing by any runs. In the bottom of the first inning, Chanticleers head coach Kevin Schnall and first base coach Matt Schilling were ejected after an explosive confrontation with the umpire.
Schnall appeared to be arguing balls and strikes with the home plate umpire. He wasted little time throwing out the Coastal Carolina head coach. It wasn’t too long after that Schilling was sent to the locker room with him
“I just I don’t like it,” Kyle Peterson, who was on the ESPN broadcast calling the game, said during the next half inning. “We can’t hear everything that’s said. The rule says you can’t argue balls and strikes. So if you want to go straight by the rule, then okay, but you never go straight by the rules.”
The magnitude of the call from the home plate umpire has implications that go beyond Sunday’s Game 2 if Coastal Carolina pulls off the upset. Both coaches won’t be able to be in the dugout if there was a Game 3, meaning their coaching stint in Omaha in 2025 is over.
Social media began buzzing following the controversial ejection. Peterson added some additional commentary after the incident was able to set in.

“I mean, it was Kevin Schnall did not exactly walk back into the dugout. It started at first base with his first base coach and ultimately, that’s who was going to get the warning and then it took on from there,” Peterson said later in the third inning. “I still think it’s too quick.”
Coastal Carolina bounced back swiftly, however, breaking the opening tie and taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Dean Mihos for the Chanticleers hit a home run to left field to break open the scoreboard. LSU would go on to answer back with the tying run in the third inning.
A victory on Sunday would mean the Tigers are College World Series champions for the second time in three seasons, and eighth overall. Coastal Carolina is looking to win its first championship since 2016, but they’ll have to win on Sunday and once more on Monday if they want to claim the title after losing Game 1.
If there is a Game 3, it will be set for 7:30 p.m. ET on Monday. The game would air live on ESPN.
