Liberty assistant Tanner Burns expected to be hired at Auburn
Auburn is expected to hire Liberty special teams coordinator and outside linebackers coach Tanner Burns in an off-field role, sources tell On3. He’s expected to be a leading figure for the Tigers’ special teams.
Burns worked under new Auburn coach Hugh Freeze at Liberty the last four seasons. He was the Flames’ special teams coordinator all four years and also coached Liberty’s outside linebacker group the last two seasons.

Under Burns, the Flames ranked 27th nationally in opponent kick return average in 2021, 23rd in punt return average in 2020 and 19th in kick return average in 2019.
Burns, an Ole Miss graduate, previously worked in the SEC as a special teams quality control coach at Arkansas from 2014 to 2018. Before that, he spent a year as a special teams intern in the NFL with the Oakland Raiders.
