Brian Kelly shares major injury update on Princeton Malbrue after Week 1
LSU defensive end Princeton Malbrue was escorted to the locker room by the Tigers’ training staff in the second quarter of the team’s season opener against USC in Las Vegas on Sunday. Not returning to the game with a knee injury that head coach Brian Kelly recently revealed looks severe for the Louisiana native.
“The only disappointing news is Princeton Malbrue looks to have a serious knee injury,” Kelly said on Tuesday. “We’re going to do a little bit more imaging on that today, but the the initial imaging was not good.”
According to Kelly, more information regarding the severity of Malbrue’s knee injury will be known in the near future following a report from Sr. Associate Athletic Trainer Owen Stanley. With Malbrue going down on a kickoff following the team’s first touchdown of the game that moved the kick back 15 yards following an unsportsmanlike conduct from Kyren Lacy after his first touchdown of the season.
“Owen would get to me here when I’m done with this press conference. But it was not good for a knee injury that happened on the kickoff that was returned after the penalty. Which we’ve sent in to take a look at, because it was what we thought was an egregious block in the back,” Kelly added.

Malbrue’s injury happening on a potentially missed penalty would only make matters worse for the junior. Who’s hoping the third season with the Tigers was not one he only played one total quarter in as he awaits more information about his injury.
Following two seasons with Northwestern State, Malbrue transferred to LSU ahead of the 2021 season. Recording 13 tackles, two tackles for loss, and a sack for the Demons his seven game appearances at the FCS level. Serving primarily as a special teams contributor for the Tigers with 15 total tackles in the last two seasons with LSU in 18 game appearances.
The initial reports of Malbrue’s injury do not sound very promising, but regardless of the severity, a speedy recovery and return to the field is being hoped for in The Bayou and beyond moving forward.
