LSU safety Jardin Gilbert ejected for targeting after spectacular catch by Kyron Hudson
LSU safety Jardin Gilbert was ejected in the fourth quarter of Sunday night’s game. He was called for targeting on a completion from USC quarterback Miller Moss to Kyron Hudson down the left sideline in the final seconds of the game.
Hudson made an impressive catch on the play. Gilbert was simply trying to make a tackle, and officials ruled that he was tossed from the rest of the game. He will officially miss the first half of next week’s game vs. Nicholls State.
The penalty would have given the Trojans a chip shot attempt at a game-winning field goal, but they ended up scoring a touchdown to put them up 27-20 with eight seconds left, shortly after the targeting penalty was called. The Trojans ended the game in the final seconds, forcing an interception from LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier to officially seal the victory.
Here is video of the tackle that got Gilbert tossed.

The ball on the play that got Gilbert ejected was a beautifully placed ball by USC quarterback Miller Moss. And yet another spectacular catch from Kyron Hudson, who had a huge night for the Trojans. He led his team in receiving with five catches for 83 yards, including one that could very well end up being the best catch of the 2024 college football season.
It was a rough way to end a classic game on Sunday night for the LSU Tigers. While Sunday night’s loss was a tough pill to swallow, there are still plenty of positives to take away. Such as the spectacular play of quarterback Garrett Nussmeier. He didn’t disappoint in his second start, dropping dime after dime for the Tigers throughout the night.

The LSU quarterback connected on 29 of his 38 passes for 304 yards, while tossing in two touchdowns with one interception. The interception was right at the end of the game, when USC linebacker Mason Cobb picked him off to officially seal the victory for the Trojans.
Nussmeier also connected on a beautiful 19-yard touchdown strike to Kyren Lacy in the second quarter. The LSU quarterback dropped back and threw a perfectly placed ball from the right hash of the 28-yard line. The ball found the outstretched hands of Lacy in midair in the left side of the end zone.
USC moves to 1-0 on the 2024 campaign and LSU moves to 0-1. It’ll be interesting to see how both teams finish out the season.
