LSU transfer wide receiver Shelton Sampson Jr. committed to Louisiana, he announced via social media on Friday. He entered the transfer portal Dec. 9 following two seasons in Baton Rouge.

Sampson appeared in eight games this past season for LSU after taking a redshirt as a true freshman in 2023. He didn’t record a stat, but made one start as a redshirt freshman. He will have three years of eligibility remaining.

Sampson played high school football at Baton Rouge (La.) Catholic, where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 80 overall player from the 2023 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

As a freshman at LSU, Shelton Sampson sat behind eventual first-round picks Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas in the wide receiver room. Kyren Lacy then became the top wide receiver target for Garrett Nussmeier, and Sampson is now taking his talents elsewhere – while also staying close to home.

Sampson is one of 17 players to transfer from LSU following an up-and-down 2024 season. The Tigers went 8-4 overall and 5-3 in SEC play to miss out on both the conference championship and College Football Playoff in Brian Kelly’s third year at the helm. The program has been active in the portal through this cycle, though, with seven commits coming into the fold.

LSU also got some big-time news on Friday when star pass rusher Harold Perkins announced his plans to return in 2025. He missed the majority of this past season with an injury, but is now preparing to run it back.

Perkins was an AP preseason All-America selection ahead of this season. In his limited time on the field, Perkins made his presence felt, recording 16 tackles and a fumble recovery.

In his first two seasons with the Tigers, Perkins amassed a combined 146 tackles, 13 sacks, six forced fumbles, two interceptions and four pass breakups. For his efforts, he was named an All-SEC Second Team member by the league’s coaches in 2023.
