Quarterback Tyler Van Dyke‘s first season with Wisconsin came to an unfortunate, early end in Week 3. Van Dyke suffered a season-ending knee injury against Alabama just a few games into his tenure with the Badgers after joining the team this offseason through the transfer portal following four seasons at Miami.

Van Dyke underwent on Monday, and, following rehab, he could likely return to the Wisconsin program through a medical redshirt. It’s a potential future that head coach Luke Fickell addressed during his press conference on Monday.

“We haven’t sat and talked with him, obviously there’s been a lot of things that have happened really fast,” Fickell said. “You could say the same things about James Thompson. These situations happen, you’re in the midst of a season. I think guys got to be able to process themselves, where they are, and what they’re doing.”

Like Van Dyke, Thompson is also expected to miss the remainder of the 2024 season after suffering from an upper body injury that also required surgery. Leaving the Badgers not only down two impact players, but two leaders for their respective sides of the ball.

“We’ll sit down and definitely talk with Tyler, will definitely sit down talk with James Thompson. It is what it is, and you see where they are and where you are. But I know this, that we love Tyler, and we love what he’s done, and hopefully there’s an opportunity that he wants to come back. That he would have that chance,” Fickell said.

Van Dyke threw for 406 yards and a touchdown in his first two starts for Wisconsin before suffering from his knee injury. But joined the team with 28 career starts under his belt with 7,469 yards and 45 touchdown passes at Miami. A veteran quarterback who could surely help the Badgers next season after returning to full strength.

“Obviously we’ll put a plan in place for that and that’s the way we’ll go about it,” Fickell explained. “Obviously with his rehab and making sure that he is in our thoughts, because he had surgery today, but he’ll be in our plans as well.”

Braedyn Locke now takes of the reins of Wisconsin’s offense in Van Dyke’s absence, a role he’ll likely serve in for the rest of the season. But it will be fascinating to see what decision Van Dyke makes moving forward regarding his future with the Badgers and beyond.
