Mac Markway injury update: Matt Rhule reveals Nebraska TE, LSU transfer will miss rest of season
After just arriving in Lincoln, Mac Markway will no longer be available for Nebraska this season.
Per Matt Rhule, Markway will miss the rest of the year for the Cornhuskers after tearing his ACL. That starts with a surgery that he’ll undergo on Friday on the knee.
“Yeah, Mac Markway tore his ACL in, like, the third practice that he was here,” said Rhule during his press conference today. “So he’s having surgery tomorrow.”
This comes soon after Markway recently transferred in from LSU. He appeared in a dozen games as a true freshman last fall in Baton Rouge. In those outings, he caught three passes for 16 yards and a touchdown. However, he had stepped away from the Tigers earlier in August and eventually came from the portal to join the ‘Huskers at the end of last month.
Markway, a native of Saint Louis, Missouri, played high school football at DeSmet. He was a four-star prospect there as the No. 255 overall recruit in the 2023 cycle. That’s according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He also rated as the No. 17 TE in the class and the No. 8 player in his state.

This would have been a quality addition for this season as Nebraska had plans for utilizing him based on what was said last week. Instead, though, he will have to wait another year to compete for them with a potential redshirt on the table with him as a true sophomore.
More on Markway’s recent transfer to Nebraska
Mac Markway just enrolled at Nebraska and joined their team according to a report by On3’s Steve Wiltfong.
Markway then posted a photo of a ‘Husker helmet to social media.
After playing one season at LSU, Brian Kelly shared that Markway made the decision that he wasn’t going to play there anymore. However, at the time Kelly spoke about his decision, he didn’t know if he’d be transferring or not.
In the end, he did choose to transfer and appears to have landed at a program in the Big Ten.
Markway’s father, Matt, spoke to On3 and shared why they chose to transfer to Nebraska.
“Program on the rise, tight end heavy offense, great fans,” Matt Markway said.
