Mack Brown asked players if he should remain UNC head coach after JMU loss, regrets decision
North Carolina head football coach Mack Brown was understandably disappointed after his Tar Heels team was blown out by James Madison on Saturday. With that said, he regrets his actions following the game.
Brown said at his press conference on Monday that he asked his players if he should resign or remain the head coach after the Dukes beat UNC 70-50 Saturday afternoon in Chapel Hill.
He feels that he put his players in an unfair position by asking them that question following the game.
“As I was walking off the field, I thought ‘I’m responsible for all of this. It’s on me. So I should ask the players about leadership. If they feel good about me moving forward.’ That’s something I shouldn’t do. I shouldn’t put that pressure on those young people at that point,” Mack Brown explained Monday. “I’m supposed to be a leader, and probably the worst things I’ve ever said in my life are after losses. You all have heard most of them. And that’s just what I do.

Brown did share that the players told him they want him to remain the head coach. He confirmed that he will continue to lead the North Carolina football program moving forward.
“Disappointed in me. I should’ve waited,” Brown said. “But the kids were overwhelmingly, ‘Nah, come on, coach. Let’s go. Let’s move forward.’ And we’re doing that and excited about the future and love my job.”
Mack Brown felt good about the week of preparation leading up to the James Madison game, but it was evident early on that North Carolina was going to have its hands full.

The Dukes led 53-21 at the half and were in control throughout. The performance left Brown stunned and questioning his future, but he’s motivated to get things back on track.
“I was very disappointed in the game. Disappointed in me, and as you all know, I don’t handle things well after losses,” Brown said. “Walking off the field I was really disappointed. We had a great week of practice. We’re 3-0. Felt really good about the team and we made entirely too many mistakes during the ballgame.”
Up next, the Tar Heels will attempt to rebound when they play at Duke Saturday afternoon. It will be interesting to see how UNC responds.
“Love these kids. I love this place and that’s why I hate losing so much. Didn’t really think that much about it after we did it and moving forward and looking forward to playing Duke this weekend,” Brown said. “But, I’m supposed to be a role model for these kids and supposed to take the negatives and turn them to positives.
“Supposed to learn from losses, and I didn’t do that very well Saturday night.”
