Magoon Gwath was one of the top players available in the NCAA transfer portal. High-major programs across the country were fighting for his services over the past few days. But their efforts will go without any reward.

If Gwath does return to college basketball, he will play next season for San Diego State. He announced the decision on Tuesday on Instagram, sending Aztec fans into celebration mode. Gwath will still test the NBA waters but nobody will be able to convince him to transfer.

“Home is where the heart is,” Gwath said. “Staying home! I am excited to share that I am removing my name from the transfer portal. If I return to school next season, it will be as an Aztec! Thank you for your continued support as I go through the 2025 NBA Draft process.”

Earlier on Tuesday, On3’s Joe Tipton placed a prediction for the Kentucky Wildcats to land a commitment from Gwath. Head coach Mark Pope crushed UK’s portal haul last season and was hoping to do the same. Adding Gwath would have been one of the biggest additions out there.

Kentucky will, unfortunately, have to look elsewhere for a star big man heading into Pope’s second campaign. Gwath found great success as a true freshman in the Mountain West and wants to recreate the magic next year. Massive news for San Diego State, keeping one of their ownside the program.

More on Magoon Gwath, freshman season at San Diego State

Gwath, a seven-footer with a seven-foot-three wingspan, spent the past two seasons as a redshirt freshman with the Aztecs. He redshirted last year before appearing and being productive in 26 games this season for SDSU.

Gwath averaged 8.5 points (50.6% FG, 37.8% 3PT), 5.2 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks per game this season. The blocks per game were most in the Mountain West and tied for sixth in all of the NCAA. With that, Gwath was named Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year, as part of the Mountain West All-Defensive Team, while also being Mountain West Freshman of the Year.

Gwath is a native of Euless, Texas as he attended Trinity High School for three years. He’d then attend Veritas Prep to finish his prep career, though, in Garden Grove, California. As a recruit, he chose San Diego State over programs like OregonOregon StateUSC, and Villanova.
