Marcel Reed, Conner Weigman QB decision: Texas A&M makes final call vs Bowling Green
For the third time in four games, Texas A&M is set to play in front of the Kyle Field faithful. Head coach Mike Elko strolls in with a 2-1 record and is looking for another win before getting into the heart of SEC play. Bowling Green is Saturday’s opponent and who would be starting at quarterback was a huge storyline heading in.
A decision has been made not too far from kickoff, with Marcel Reed reportedly getting the star per Billy Liucci of TexAgs. Conner Weigman, who was the guy entering the 2024 season, is still dealing with a shoulder injury and will not play against Bowling Green.
“A&M QB Marcel Reed to make his second straight start for the Aggies in place of Conner Weigman (shoulder),” Liucci said via X.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel provided an update of his own on the situation Friday while speaking on ESPN. The plan appears to be resting Weigman so he is able to play during a long season, not wanting to risk him against Bowling Green. Starting Reed also allows him to continue his positive development.

“As for Conner Weigman, the will he, won’t he was the biggest story of last Saturday,” Thamel said on “College Football Live” on Friday. “He did not go against Florida. Marcel Reed stepped in, did a great job. Weigman’s dealing with an injury in his throwing shoulder.

“Mike Elko kind of said he’s going to be week-to-week for the rest of the season. It’s unlikely they are going to bring him back for the Bowling Green game on Saturday. So look for Weigman to get better and for Reed to have some more opportunity.”
Reed was Texas A&M’s quarterback last week against Florida, impressing during a road win for the Aggies. Three total touchdowns were produced by the quarterback, with one coming on the ground. He threw for 178 yards on 17 attempts while 13 carries resulted in 83 yards.
At least from the outside, the expectation is for Texas A&M to have a big day, no matter who is back there at quarterback. Reed is more than capable of leading the offense, as shown against Florida. There is no reason to rush an injured player back when facing a lesser opponent.
Texas A&M is set to face Arkansas next week where Elko will have a real decision to make. Weigman will have another week to rest his shoulder and try to get back out there for the Aggies.
