SF Marcus Spears Jr, son of ESPN NFL Analyst Marcus Spears, breaks down early LSU and Texas offers
Marcus Spears Jr. is a 6-foot-7 wing from Texas making a name for himself among the basketball landscape. This summer he averaged 12.2 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks while shooting 49.4 percent from the field for his Drive Nation team on Nike’s E15 Circuit.
“I’m a two-way player, I would say,” Spears told On3. “Mostly on defense right now, but my offensive game is starting to come along. I’m getting my shot right and getting downhill. I’m able to read the defense better now. Instead of thinking of a move and doing it, I’m reacting to what the defense is giving me and doing a move. I watch a lot of Jayson Tatum. I like how he is an all-around player, he plays defense and can score.”
On3 was able to catch up with Marcus Spears Jr. after a recent live viewing to discuss his game and the early stages of his recruitment.
“Right now I have offers from Texas and LSU,” Spears said. “I’ve been on both campuses already.”
Spears discusses Texas and LSU
LSU: “LSU is a great place. My parents went there. They have a new coaching staff there and they have great facilities. I like Louisiana, for real. There is nothing really like Baton Rouge to me. They have a great campus and a good coach.”

TEXAS: “Texas probably has the nicest college facility to me. I like Coach Rodney (Terry), he’s a new coach and is building the program. I’m going to watch them this year to see how they do. Texas has a great campus, and my sister is going there. So for both of us to be there together, that would be big.”
“We’ve also heard from schools like SMU, TCU, and Tennessee,” Spears said.
Marcus Spears Jr.’ bloodlines
Marcus Spears Jr. is the son of former defensive lineman Marcus Spears. His mom is Aiysha (Smith) Spears who played basketball at LSU before becoming the No. 7 overall pick, to the Washington Mystics, in the 2003 WNBA Draft. Spears’ sister Cari Spears is a senior in high school, a nationally-ranked volleyball player who has signed to play at Texas. She was the Texas Gatorade State Player of the Year as a sophomore.
In his words
“I want to play for a coach that I trust will get me better,” Spears said. “I don’t want to play for someone who will look at me and is good with how I am already. I’ll want a coach who wants to develop me and to play for a coach who is fully honest with me, whether I’m playing well or not. I want to play for a coach who understands me and is 100 percent in communication with me.”
