Miami defensive lineman Rueben Bain will not play against Florida A&M in Week 2, head coach Mario Cristobal announced.

Bain was injured on the first drive of Miami’s 41-17 win over Florida and did not return. He ultimately played three snaps during the season opener.

“It’s going to be a couple of weeks,” Cristobal told reporters on Monday. “I’ll know more as these tests go on today and during the course of the week, but he is not going to be playing this week.”

In Bain’s absence, Tyler Baron led the Miami defensive line with two tackles for loss, a sack and three quarterback pressures. He was aided by DE Elijah Alston‘s 1.5 TFLs, 0.5 sacks to go with three quarterback pressures of his own.

It’s unclear how long Bain will be sidelined for, and even though his defensive line cohorts took care of business in The Swamp, it’s a tough blow for Cristobal’s defense.

Last season, Bain proved himself to be one of the top true freeshman defensive lineman in the country. He logged 7.5 sacks — second best of all true freshman in the country — and 45 quarterback pressure and earned Freshman All-American status thanks to his efforts. Bain was also the Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Rookie of the Year and a Third-Team All-ACC performer in his first season at the college ranks.

Before arriving on campus, Bain was a four-star recruit in the On3 Industry Rankings, a proprietary algorithm that compiles ratings and rankings from all four primary recruiting media services. The Miami native was the No. 57 recruit in the 2023 class as well as the No. 8 defensive lineman.

“He is going to end up being one of the best players to go to the University of Miami,” Cristobal said, via his On3 recruiting page. ” He is as talented, as driven and as tough as it gets. His best football is ahead of him.”

Miami’s Week 2 matcup against Florida A&M is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 7 at 6 p.m. ET and will air live on ESPN+ and ACC Extra.

The next time Bain will be evaluated will be for the ‘Canes Week 3 home game against Ball State on Sept. 14.
