Mark Stoops expects Carson Beck to be 'one of several' players as Heisman finalists
Kentucky Wildcats head coach Mark Stoops got a good look at Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Carson Beck on Saturday night. Now, he shared that he thinks he could be one of the players invited to New York as a Heisman finalist.
Stoops explained that it was vital for Kentucky to put pressure on Beck because he’s a special player. That type of player can be a major problem for a defense if they’re allowed to sit back and pick the secondary apart.
“We did win some good matchups as well, got some really good pressure on them,” Mark Stoops said. “Carson Beck is, I would expect him to be one of several in New York. He’s that kind of player and he’s just a really good player and we made him uncomfortable at times and I think that’s key.”
The game itself was much tighter than expected, largely thanks to the Kentucky defense’s success in stopping Carson Beck and the Georgia offense. However, in the end, the Bulldogs did survive and won the game by a score of 13-12. Stoops, meanwhile, was criticized for his decision to punt the ball away to Georgia late in the game.

For his part, Carson Beck finished the game having completed the game completing 15 out of 24 passes for 160 yards. It was Beck’s first time not throwing a touchdown pass in a game since last season’s SEC Championship Game. It was also the fewest passing yards he’s had since he became the starting quarterback at Georgia.

Stoops isn’t wrong in arguing that Beck looks like a Heisman finalist. Ahead of the season, he was widely predicted to be a finalist, if not the winner of the award. However, since the start of the season, the Heisman hype around him has cooled down a little bit, though he’s still very much in that conversation.
For the season, Carson Beck has completed 68.3 percent of his passes for 680 yards and seven touchdowns. He did that with a 12.1 yards per completion rate. On top of that, he has rushed for 55 yards in three games.
Next, the Georgia Bulldogs are going to get a bye week to regroup. After that, Georgia will play on the road against the Alabama Crimson Tide. It’s an opportunity for Carson Beck to put together an improved performance and a Heisman moment in a marquee game.
On the other hand, Mark Stoops and Kentucky are looking to bounce back with a non-conference game against the Ohio Bobcats.
