Marshall linebacker Stephen Dix Jr. has entered his name into the transfer portal.

Dix Jr. shared the news of his transfer himself on Thursday on social media before officially entering on Friday.

“I will be entering the portal as a grad transfer with two years of eligibility,” read Dix Jr.’s tweet.

“Thank you Marshall. Words can not describe how thankful I am for Marshall University,” Dix Jr. wrote in his statement. “Thank you Coach Huff and Coach Semore for believing in me and giving me a chance. Thank you to my teammates who are now my Herd Brothers for life. The bonds I have created with y’all have made you all family and I will cherish the memories I have made here forever. Thank you so much to the community for welcoming me in the Marshall Family with open arms. Marshall will always hold a special place in my heart.”

Dix Jr. started his career at Florida State where he spent three seasons as a Seminoles. He then transferred last offseason and played for the Thundering Herd this past fall.

Dix Jr. has totaled 124 tackles, a pair of sacks, and two deflections over three seasons on the field. That comes after he missed his final season with the ‘Noles due to injury.

In the one year in Huntington, Dix Jr. played well with a career-high of 66 tackles, both of his sacks, and a deflection. The tackles were third-most on the team while the sacks were tied for sixth with two other linebackers on the defense.

Dix Jr., a native of Orlando, played high school football at Dr. Phillips. He was a four-star prospect there as the No. 284 overall recruit in the 2020 cycle. That’s according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He also rated as the No. 35 LB in the class and a Top-50 player out of the state.

Dix Jr. is one of 26 transfers to leave Marshall this offseason in the portal. A dozen of those came from their defense with Dix Jr. being one of three linebackers along with Jayven Hall (Georgia State) and Marc Viechec.

As for additions, the Thundering Herd have brought in 17 players from out of the portal. Three of those are for the defensive side of the ball with one linebacker in Ashton Heflin (Georgia Tech) as well as a safety in Isaiah Johnson (Arizona State) and a defensive lineman in Jason Shuford (East Carolina).
