Matt Leinart reacts to son's commitment to SMU Mustangs
Earlier this week, SMU picked up a commitment from Cole Leinart, a junior quarterback out of Los Angeles Redondo Union.
Leinart, the son of former Heisman Trophy winner, national champion and first-round NFL Draft pick Matt Leinart, is a three-star prospect and became the second member of the Mustangs’ 2026 recruiting class.
The 6-foot-3, 180-pounder was on the Hilltop last weekend and watched SMU take down Pitt in a big ACC matchup. Just a few days later, he pledged to Rhett Lashlee and Co.
“I love the culture, what they are building, the coaches,” Leinart told On3’s Steve Wiltfong of his decision. “Love everything about it.”
Right after Leinart’s commitment went public, Matt took to X and commented on his son’s decision, saying “Way to go bud. Proud of you. This is just the beginning!” On Friday, the former USC Trojan reflected on seeing his eldest get to this point in his football journey:

“Being a parent is the greatest gift anyone can receive. To be able to watch my oldest and his journey has been incredible. I’ve always told him this is about you, your journey, your goals. If you want it go get it. And son you have, you’ve earned this and you deserve it but it’s only the beginning. The work starts now. I’m so proud of you Cole no matter what happens. Love you!”
Cole Leinart is the No. 733 overall prospect and No. 64 QB in the 2026 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He’s also the No. 86 junior in the Golden State.
Leinart has thrown for over 700 yards and nine touchdowns amidst his junior season at Redondo Union, according to MaxPreps. The Sea Hawks are currently on a six-game winning streak with the California high school football playoffs approaching.
His father is one of the many top prospects to come out of California powerhouse Mater Dei in Santa Ana. He committed to USC in the 2001 cycle and excelled as a Trojan before being taken No. 10 overall by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2006 NFL Draft. Matt played seven seasons, where he started 18 times and won eight games.
