Matt Rhule addresses Shedeur Sanders spat from 2023: 'I got love in my heart'

Last season, Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders called Nebraska‘s matchup with the Buffs last season “personal.”
Sanders said he wasn’t a fan of Matt Rhule or the program due to alleged disrespectful comments Rhule made toward Colorado and his father, Buffs head coach Deion Sanders. Colorado ultimately defeated Nebraska 36-14 in the contest.
Heading into the second meeting, Rhule seemingly squashed the beef between the two head coaches ahead of the Week 2 meeting.
“I don’t take anything [personally],” Rhule said on Monday. “Everybody’s got their own things to do. I’ve got love in my heart and a lot of respect for what they’re doing. Nothing will bother me. At the end of the day, if Shedeur thought I disrespected his father, he’s standing up for him. Good for him. My son would stand up for me.”

Shedeur Sanders did ultimately get the better of the Cornhuskers in last year’s meeting, throwing for 393 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Buffs to the victory. After the game, he didn’t hold back in letting his feeling on Nebraska known at the time.

“It was extremely personal,” Shedeur Sanders said. “We go out there and warm up, you’ve got the head coach of the other team trying to stand out in the middle of the Buff. It’s okay if, like, a couple players do it, it’s fine. Like, just enjoy the scenery.
“But when you’ve got the whole team trying to disrespect it, I’m not going for that at all. I went in there and disrupted it. So they knew I’m for real. The Buffaloes mean a lot to me. Personally, that’s what I was saying pregame and that’s when I knew it was just extreme disrespect.”
Those comments were made nearly a year ago, and it’s unclear whether those on the Colorado side feel the same way.
For Rhule, he had nothing but good things to say about the Buffs’ star QB. He said Shedeur Sanders has a “big-time arm,” and can use every inch of the field to his advance while also having a great feel for the pocket.
Kickoff between the Buffaloes and Huskers is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET and will air live on NBC.
